Aside

I adore my husband

When E woke up earlier, he prepared a cup of hot tea for me and set it on my desk as he greeted me. He does this daily.

Yesterday he commented, "This is the first thing I do when I wake up. I make you a cup of tea before I make myself a cup of coffee." I responded, "I feel the love!" (His first cup of coffee is very important to him.)

He does this for me daily because I asked him to.

My love languages are acts of service and receiving gifts. A large part of these languages is anticipating what another person would need or enjoy, and then taking the initiative to do the thing. It's a way of communicating "I thought of you" with actions instead of words.

This does not come naturally to E. (His love language is words of affirmation.)

So by requesting a small act of service from him, I receive a daily dose of joy. This has the added benefit of tickling my second language as well. I drink so much tea, he can gift me tea leaves, like the recent chrysanthemum flowers.

Yes, I can make my own cup of tea. But it's so much more enjoyable when he makes it for me. 🌸

(I know. The 5 love languages. 🙄 It was a cute concept, when I knew it only as an infographic. And then I learned about the book via the If Books Could Kill podcast,1 and I was glad that I didn't know more.)

  1. I don't listen to podcasts often, so I've only heard two episodes — The 5 Love Languages and Rich Dad Poor Dad. I love everything about the podcast concept: "the airport bestsellers that captured our hearts and ruined our minds." ↩
