Migrating from Proton Mail to Fastmail
Background
My slow-motion move away from Gmail is complete now with my recent change to Fastmail. I've been using a free Proton Mail account for this Bearblog, and it was quite alright, but now that I am on a paid Fastmail account, I want to consolidate.
I've updated my About page with my new eeeee.lol email address. I didn't want to lose any of the emails I've exchanged on Proton, so I've copied them over to Fastmail.
What I did
Install and open Thunderbird
Connect Fastmail to Thunderbird
- Log into fastmail.com
- Upgrade Fastmail to Duo plan
- Go to Settings > Migration > Apps & Setup guides > Set up Thunderbird
- Follow instructions on screen
Connect Proton Mail to Thunderbird
- Log into proton.me
- Upgrade Proton Mail to Mail Plus for $1 and then cancel subscription
- Go to Settings > IMAP/SMTP > Proton Mail Bridge
- Download and install Bridge for Windows
- Open Proton Mail Bridge and follow instructions on screen to connect Proton account and email client
Move Proton emails to Fastmail
- Go to Thunderbird
- Drag and drop emails from Proton's Inbox and Sent folders into Fastmail's Archive folder
